David Raccuglia tells me he’s standing outside his salon in Chicago, Art + Science, when I catch up with him for our phone interview. He’s watching clients inside get their hair done and trying to discern the next big movement in hair. He says keeping up with trends is all part of his job as CEO of American Crew, MOP, and D:fi Hair – the three brands he created. “You learn a lot about pop-culture movements by spending time with hairdressers,” he says.

Raccuglia says he’s also inspired by art, music and the early ‘60s, but most of all by hairdressers. “I started as a barber in 1977. It was a cool time to get into the business because everything was changing – hair was getting more unisex.” He attended Joliet Barber College in Illinois, then traveled worldwide during the ‘80s as a platform artist and educator. In the late ‘80s, he started Art + Science and opened two more locations in Chicago soon after. “I loved that experience of being grounded, of owning my own salon and working with clients,” he says. “It made me a better hairdresser.”

In the early ‘90s, Raccuglia discerned a hole in the market. “I saw a return to classic grooming, but there weren’t any products for men except in grocery stores. I came up with the idea for American Crew in 1993 and launched it that same year.” A few years later, the burgeoning natural-food movement inspired him to launch MOP. He created D:fi to provide quality products for young men and women between the ages of 12-24.

Raccuglia’s other passion besides hairdressing is photography. But he’s no amateur. His images have appeared on magazine covers and rock albums, and his subjects have included Heather Graham, Tom Waits, the Dalai Lama and Ray Charles. He even shoots the ads for his company. “The diversity of what I do is what makes my work phenomenal to me, to be able to work with hairdressers, products and photography and shove it all into a blender and see what comes out. There’s never a dull moment.”
